Importance of a Pinned Post in Direct Selling

In the past, I have spoken about the importance of having a well-rounded profile on whatever platform you sell on. It helps the buyers get a better, more diverse understanding of what content you have to offer. There is one aspect of a well-rounded profile that needs to be emphasized more and that is a pinned post with all your crucial information. In this resource we are covering what a pinned post is, why its important to have it, and exatly what needs to be in it.

Why a Pinned Post?

Having a pinned post on your profile is crucial for many reasons including:

  • Buyers know what to expect when it comes to your offering and rates.
  • It will help buyers decide if they even want to reach out to you based on your information, saving you time and energy from answering the same questions repeatedly.
  • Some subreddits require certain information to be publicly visible for you to make reports.
  • it will also help immensely in building trust with potential buyers.

That pinned post shows you are taking this seriously, operating as a professional, and not just guesstimating rates. It shows them what to expect and gives them a heads-up before messaging you if you are even within their price range. It will save both parties from wasting each other’s time with questions that won’t lead to a sale. It doesn’t have to be a wall of text or even frumpy in the slightest. Here is mine for example. You can utilize this space to be a part of your brand and show off who you are.

From a Consumer and CST Partnner

This is all from my perspective as a creator though, and that is not the perspective we need to be focusing on. We need to hear from a buyer. So, I reached out to Cesar, one of and my best friends and a moderator of r/fetishbuyerscommunity, r/fetishspicytea r/creators_spicy_tea. He is also a very long-term member of the fetish-buying community on Reddit. Here is what he had to say on the topic:

“Personally, I’m very reluctant to work with a creator that doesn’t have a menu posted, and I absolutely will not work with one that doesn’t have any kind of menu at all. Usually, if I look at a profile and they don’t have a menu posted at all, they immediately get moved to the back of my list of creators to work with. I do my research, I don’t just look at a post and reach out to someone, I will dig into their profile and see if they seem like someone I want to work with.

The menu is the first step, it shows me they are serious about selling and have their rates set out. I can quickly look through the menu, see if they offer services/products that align with what I enjoy, and then see if their rates fall into a range that I am comfortable spending. I will never argue pricing with a seller, I fully respect them charging what they determine is fair for their time. I also have a rate that I am comfortable paying, and if we don’t align, then that is fine. I know ahead of time, and there is no need to waste either of our time reaching out. I can always come back somewhere down the line if I’m in a position to spend at their rate.

There are occasions when I don’t see a menu on their profile, but they seem like someone I would really like to work with, I will reach out and ask if they have a menu with rates for both physical items and digital content. It hasn’t happened often, but it has happened where I get sent the menu and I get that sticker shock. Once again, I fully respect the creator charging what works for them, but now I have to politely explain that her rates are outside of my range, and that always feels bad/awkward. This is why I will often not even ask. I don’t want to have to have that conversation and I also don’t want to waste anyone’s time, so I just avoid it.

If I do ask a creator if they have a menu/rates, and they come back saying that they don’t and they price each order out individually…that is an immediate no from me. I have heard the excuse that each request is so different so that is why they don’t have a menu…and I call bullshit. You still have a base rate that you use to build off of, and then you can adjust for specific requests like name use or heavy fetish content. If someone tells me that they will charge based off the request, that tells me they are just looking for anything and everything to nickel and dime the order. I’m also not interested with them providing a rate but then saying they are willing to negotiate with me on the price. Once again, I don’t argue pricing and I don’t haggle. You should have a rate and you should charge at that rate. If you are willing to adjust just to make the sale…honestly, you are not someone I am really interested in working with anymore. That is very much a me thing, but it speaks to integrity and how much you put into what you do. It is one thing to offer a deal/sale to everyone and have a flat drop on your services for a short time. It’s another to be loose on pricing just to secure an order.

Also, not having any kind of a menu just feels like you, the creator, are opening yourself up to buyers who are going to try and dictate their own pricing and haggle with you over everything. Not sure why you would want the hassle, but that also tells me a little about you as well.

General industry standard is for creators to have a menu. As a seasoned buyer, this is something that I find incredibly important, and sellers that do not have them could be missing out on potential clients, as I know I am not alone in operating this way.”

What to Include in Your Pinned Post:

  • A Short Introduction
    • Share a little about who you are and what you create. Keep it approachable while staying true to your brand.
    • This is a great place to show off who you are and your personality. Reddit is a platform that very highly focuses on people being people. If you are very straight creator and don’t inject some of who you are as a person, you won’t see as many results.
  • Limits and Terms
    • If you have specific limits you should post them here
    • If you have specific terms buyers must know, such as age verification requirements, post them here as well.
  • Your Menu
    • Include your menu in the post. This is the absolute most important part.
  • Links or Methods to Contact You
    • Add in your most important links. All of the important contact information that your consumer needs to see to get to where you want them, whether that be a platform or a separate app for direct selling, you’re going to want to add that in.
    • Links to your drawer or your pre-made portfolio whould fit here as well.
  • FAQ Section
    • Use this space to answer common questions in a way that reflects your style. This will help preserve your energy from having to answer the same questions a bit less.

Final Thoughts

It seems my teammate and my perspective are fairly matched. Having a pinned post with all your information will not only help you keep your numbers straight but also help you prevent wasted time and energy. If you need some guidance designing your tip menu, this is a fantastic resource. If the guidance needed is more geared to pricing your menu, check out this podcast episode.

Thank you to Cesar for his perspective on this topic! We will always believe the wisdom of the crowd is always greater than that of the individual, from all sides of the industry.
