Protect Your Account: Avoiding the Bluesky Spam Label

Finding the Definition of Bluesky Spam

We all know the obvious spam behaviors. We all remember the chaos of the creator bots that owned the platform for a bit and gave names to Bluesky spam. But the intricacies are not officially written out anywhere.

On a recent Reddit post on r/BlueskySocial someone wanted to know why they had been labeled as Bluesky spam. In that post they gave us a true gift. A screenshot of an email sent by Bluesky support listing out at least some of the activities they label spam.

Now, to be upfront, as of 3/31/2025 there has been a wave of reports of brand new accounts being auto-banned upon creation. The user happened to post within this time frame, so likely they were just caught in the wave. But, the silver lining is this screenshot that breaks down some reclusive and hard to find information regarding Bluesky’s moderation:

The email it was sent from, noreply@bsky.social is the official no-reply email, and moderation@blueskyweb.xyz is their official moderation email. The email could of course be faked, but the details check out, and that would be an odd thing to fake in a help request post. I am going to trust it.

Bluesky Spam Behaviors

According to that screenshot we need to be certain to avoid the following behaviors to avoid having our accounts flagged as spam:

  • Bulk Following/Unfollowing: Excessive following or unfollowing large numbers of accounts
  • Interaction churn: Repeated following/unfollowing actions to gain engagement
  • Mention, Quote, or Reply Spam: Frequently mentioning, quoting, or replying to many users
  • Spam Posting: Sending multiple identical or irrelevant posts

Final Thoughts

To be honest this seems really similar to other platforms such as Reddit with the emphasis on repeated behaviors. Nothing terribly surprising, but it is very nice to see some actual documentation confirming it.

So, space everything out at a natural pace, including our scheduled posts, and use the platform in a natural manner!
