Comparison is the Death of Self-Confidence
This is long and a bit of a ramble, sorry about that!
When I first started in adult content creation I looked at all of these other creators who had come in roughly at the same time I did and were doing really well off the bat. Or I was looking at these huge creators with hundreds and thousands and millions of followings, earning so much wondering why can’t I do that? Why am I not good enough for that? That destroyed my self-confidence in this career. And I had to step away from that thought process and it wasn’t easy so I wanted to talk about how I stopped comparing myself to other creators, to see if maybe it can help you stop if you have been doing that.
There is No Normal or Expected
In adult content creation there is no normal path to entry. Some of us are coming from full service, some are coming from college, some are coming from their homes where they have their full time job or families. Some of us dive headfirst into a platform, or camming, or direct sales. There is no normal here when starting, and hell, there’s no normal here just about at any stage.
Every single one of those possible paths to entry, or possible journeys that you could have had in adult content creation completely changes what knowledge you have, what experience you have, and what abilities you have. You cannot be expected to know the rules of the game when you don’t even know what game you’re playing yet.
You want to know why other creators are ‘better’ at some things than you are? It’s because you guys had different paths to entry, different paths, different experiences and, different lessons. I do not believe there is any way that two creators can come into this and learn the same things at the exact same time if they are not living together. We will come across different platform rules, client bases, content requests, etc.
There are situations and lessons out there that I have not come across and some that I likely will never ever come across in my career because it just won’t happen upon my path. But maybe you are an expert at handling that situation and already know that lesson because you see it so often. I cannot judge myself for not knowing what you already know. I simply haven’t learned it yet.
We All Take Our Own Paths
So if there is no normal entrance into this career, and there is no normal-everyone-knows-this skill set a creator should have at any point within their career, why would you look outside of your own growth, your own evolution, and your own skill set to evaluate your success.
You don’t know how to do the things that creator does because you haven’t learned it yet. That doesn’t mean you’re not going to. It just means it hasn’t come across your path yet. You’re not where that other creator is because you came in differently, as different people, with different business models, and different personalities. Because of this you learned different lessons. You grew different ways.
You can’t judge yourself based on others success, because you didn’t go down their path. You don’t know if you went down their path you would be at the same place. Just like if someone went down your path maybe they would be in a different place in their career.
Final Thoughts
You can’t look outside your own self to evaluate your own growth. You are the one who evolved, who learned, who studied, who worked, and who grew to be exactly where you are now. You did the time, put in the effort, and you are the only one you should judge your growth by.
And if you can look back and really evaluate the skill set that you have grown, regardless of how long you’ve been in this industry, you will be amazed. Y’all are customer service experts, social media managers, photographers, videographers, editors. You guys are marketers, salesman, and web developers, and so much fucking more every day.
We handle so much. Just thinking about scheduling social promotion for me is a big one. That’s social media management. I didn’t have those skills before this. I didn’t even have social media! And now unfortunately I am very well versed from far to much practice 😅.
You went down your own path, And the only path standing in front of you is your own as well. Don’t judge where you are based on someone else. Sit and evaluate your own evolution. And be damn proud of yourselves. You earned it.
